The HLA antigens exist on the surface of white blood cells and on the surface of adjectives nucleated cells within other tissues. These antigens can be detected most easily on the cell surface lymphocytes. The presence or bunking off of these antigens is determined by the genes on chromosome 6. There are 4 genes at this locus. Each gene controls the presence or absence of HLA A, B, C, and D. There is probably a 5th genetic locus specifically closely related to D and is called DR.
